SELCA asked The Brixton Project to boost early cancer detection in Black communities across South East London. We rooted the work in everyday Brixton so it felt close, human and easy to act on. I co-created the Care Card, community-managed with barbershops and local businesses, and produced a campaign animation.

Problem
Black men face a 1 in 4 risk of prostate cancer, and Black women are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer at a later stage when it is harder to treat. Life gets busy, screenings slip, and national messages can feel distant. What is missing is trust, access and a clear next step black communities can take everyday.

Solution
We put the campaign in the places where real conversations happen. Places of worship, barbershops, salons and independent stores carried the message and the call to act. The wallet-size Care Card prompted reminders of health checks, tests and screening that people can expect to be invited to during their lifetime. Animations voiced by South Londoners made the information relatable and shareable. By using local partners and relationships we already had in Brixton, we turned good intentions into booked appointments, distributed 1,000 Care Cards across the Brixton, and received a nomination for The Drum Awards.
